We understand that this is a very difficult time for parents. Any hint
or suspicion of abuse of your child causes strong and confusing emotions.
The process of determining what happened to your child and how to proceed from
there may seem quite overwhelming.
It is the job of the SAIN Team to work together to reduce the number of times
your child will be interviewed and to ensure that your family receives swift,
necessary support.
Frequently asked questions:
What is the advantage of having my child interviewed by the team?
- By having all the necessary professionals present at the interview, your
child will be interviewed fewer times. Most children only have to go through
one interview.
- Services for your family will be better coordinated.
- You will meet all the professionals involved with your child and have the
opportunity to ask questions.
How does the interview work?
- Only one member of the team, a trained forensic interviewer, will
interview your child.
- Other team members observe through a one-way mirror.
- The team is able to communicate with the interviewer through an ear piece
to ensure all necessary information is covered.
What should I tell my child about this meeting?
- Children are most comfortable when they know what to expect.
- Explain to your child that he/she will be meeting with someone to talk
about what happened to them.
- Do not tell your child what to say; it is best simply to tell your child
to tell the truth.
- Tell your child the person that will be talking with them talks with lots
of children. Their job is to make sure children are safe.
- Some children may need reassurance that they are not in trouble and that
they are not going to this meeting because they have done something wrong.
What is my role during the interview?
- You will meet with the team members before the interview.
- We encourage you to bring a friend or family member to sit with you while
your child is being interviewed.
- From our experience, it is important for the interviewer to talk to your
child alone.
- Because this is an investigation, the team members must carefully observe,
assess and document the interview. They will be available to respond
to any questions or concerns following the interview.
What will happen after the interview?
- The professionals on the team will meet briefly to discuss any information
disclosed during the interview.
- You will then meet with the team to discuss information about your child's
interview and hear the team's recommendations.
- Your child's case will be conferenced by the team on a regular basis to
ensure that you and your child receive all necessary services.
