Helping a Child
Reporting Abuse and Neglect

Children who are victims of abuse must depend on the adults in their lives to pay attention to warning signs, believe them when they tell us something is wrong, and respond responsibly.

Reporting Abuse and Neglect

If you suspect that a child is being abused contact the Massachusetts Department of Social Services'

 Child At Risk Hotline 1-800-792-5200

For more information about reporting abuse go to

www.dsskids.org

Mandated Reporting

Under Massachusetts law anyone who works or interacts regularly with children is mandated to report suspected abuse to the Department of Social Services.

  • Phone in an oral report as soon as possible to the DSS protective screening unit

  • File a written report with DSS within 48 hours after the oral report is given

  • DSS will notify the reporter, in writing of its decision to support/unsupport the report
